Baba i-a cerut moşului nişte galbeni, dar
acesta a sfătuit-o să îşi bată găina, aşa cum
l-a învăţat ea să bată cocoşul. Furioasă, baba s-a dus în poiată, a prins
găina şi a luat-o la bătaie. Cum a scăpat din mâinile
babei, găina a fugit. Mergând pe drum, ea a găsit o
mărgică. Bucuroasă, a înghiţit mărgica şi s-a
întors acasă. A sărit peste poartă, a trecut iute pe lângă
babă şi s-a aşezat pe cuibar. Baba, când s-a uitat în cuibar,
ce să vadă? Găina se ouase o mărgică. Baba s-a
supărat, a prins găina şi a bătut-o până a
omorât-o. Aşa, a rămas
săracă şi singură.
And neither could the old woman who
was now very jealous. She dared to ask the old man: “You
old neighbour, give me some gold coins too for I’ll be forever grateful”.
But the man didn’t and reminded her of her eggs.
The old woman grew very angry with
her poor little hen that had given her eggs every single day until then and
started beating it. The hen found a small bead on the ground, swallowed it and
laid it as if it were an egg hoping that the mean old woman would be again
pleased and proud of it. When she saw the bead the woman thought her hen was
mocking at her, so she threw it out and never saw it again.
