|
- One day the old man went
fishing and he caught just a little golden fish which spoke in a human
voice: “let me go back and I’ll do whatever you wish!” .
- The old man said: “I need
nothing, go back and swim in your sea”.
|
4
|
- When the old man came back
home he told everything to his wife, but she grew angry and forced him
to come back to the golden fish and ask it for some bread.
|
5
|
- The old man went down to the
seashore and shouted: “Fish, oh fish! Stand with your tail on the sea
and your head facing me!”
- The fish came swimming to the
shore: “What do you need old man?”
- “The old woman is angry with
me. She wants some bread!”
- “Go home, you’ll have bread”
said the fish.
|
6
|
- When the old man came back
home his wife was very, very angry: “You stupid man! We have bread
aplenty but my tub is broken. Go back to your fish and ask it for a new
tub!”.
|
7
|
- The old man went down to the
sea and shouted: “Fish, oh fish! Stand with your tail on the sea and
your head facing me!”
- The fish came swimming to the
shore: “What do you need old man?”
- “My wife…she wants a new
tub!”
- “Go home, you’ll have a new
tub too” said the fish.
|
8
|
- The old man went back home
and the old woman set on him again: “Go back to your golden fish and ask
it for a new house, our cottage is falling down!”.
|
9
|
- The old man went down to the
sea and shouted: “Fish, oh fish! Stand with your tail on the sea and
your head facing me!”
- The fish came swimming to the
shore: “What do you need old man?”
- “The old woman wants a new
cottage”
- The fish said: “Go home and
all will be done”.
|
10
|
- When the old man came back
home he saw a new house, made of oak, with carved eaves but his wife was
even wilder than before: “Oh you fool! I don’t want to be a fisherman’s
wife, I want to be the Governor’s Lady. Go to the fish, go!”
|
11
|
- Back he went to the sea:
“Fish, oh fish! Stand with your tail on the sea and your head facing
me!”
- The fish came swimming to the
shore: “What do you need old man?”
- “The old woman gives me no
peace. She is tired of being a fisherman’s wife, now she wants to be the
Governor’s Lady!”
- “Go home, all will be done”
said the fish.
|
12
|
- So the old man went home and
saw a big stone house, rising up three floors with servants running up
and down and his old wife sitting on a high chair in a rich dress giving
orders: “Servants! Take this silly old man to the stable and give him
forty lashes!”.
|
13
|
- For a long time, the old man was
given a broom to sweep the yard.
- One day the old woman asked for
him.
|
14
|
- “Go back to the golden fish
because I don’t want to be the Governor’s Lady, I want to be the Tsar’s
Lady!”
|
15
|
- So the old man went down to
the sea and shouted: “Fish, oh fish! Stand with your tail on the sea and
your head facing me!”
- The fish came swimming to the
shore: “What do you need old man?”
- “The old woman, she is mad.
She doesn’t wants to be the Governor’s Lady, now she wants to be the Tsarina!”
- “Go home, all will be done.”
said the fish.
|
16
|
- So the old man returned home
and he saw a palace with a golden roof, guardsmen marched up and down.
The old woman, dressed up like a queen appeared on the balcony.
|
17
|
- By and by the old woman grew
tired of being a Queen. She ordered a search of the old man.
- Finally he was found in the
backyard.
|
18
|
- “You, old fool man! Go to the
fish. I don’t want to be the Queen anymore! I want to be the Mistress of
the Sea, so that all the seas and all the fishes obey me!”
- The old man tried to object
but if he didn’t go he’d lose his head!
|
19
|
- So he reluctantly went to the
sea: “Fish, oh fish! Stand with your tail on the sea and your head
facing me!”
- But this time no golden fish
appeared.
- The old man called it once
more, and again… no fish appeared.
- The sea began to murmur…
|
20
|
- He called it a third time…
- The little fish
appeared: “What do you need old
man?”
- “The old woman has gone even
madder! Now she wants to be the Mistress of the Sea!!!”
|
21
|
- The golden fish said nothing
to the old man, just turned its tail and vanished into the depths.
|
22
|
- When the old man returned
home the palace had gone and in its place stood a small tumble-down
cottage and there stood his wife in a ragged sarafan.
|
23
|
- They began to live as before.
The old man cast his net several times, but any gold fish was caught
again…!
